I find that I slower access times on directories that
have lots of activity... That is directories that have
many files added and deleted at different times,
rather than just X number of files causes slow
display. (EXT3 keeps histories, remember).  If this is
the case for your big directory, If you occassionally
MOVE all the files to a different directory and then
rename the directory, you should see exponentially
faster access times. 

Also, if you are using a graphic file browser, make
sure you have the sorting set to filename A-Z before
you switch to this directory.  Your issue may be with
a poor sorting algorythm in the file browser and not
so much the file system.
