- Has gnucash developed a DB backend yet? Last time I checked on it,
- everything was file-based...

At different times, there have been working RDBMS
backends.. But they usually die a quiet death, as no one seems
to want to keep them up to date..

At one point, they were planning to use some gnome/gtk
provided DB layer for 2.0, I've not investigated if it's
working or not.

(I was interested in the RDBMS support to allow
concurrent access to the information. Another way that 1.6 had
was to have a gnucash server, and the gnucash agents made rpc
calls to update the files.)
