Although I think forwarding email is a bad idea in general, I don't
think what you were doing is a bad idea, specifically. It certainly
wasn't the cause of your dns problems.
If your goal is to get your email through gmail, you might want to
consider Google Apps for Your Domain:

If your goal is to keep your email on your server but reduce spam, I'm
sure the list can give you many recommendations, (selective) greylisting
being #1.
