I should have said that "too fast" airflow could be a problem.
If you have a lot of airflow through a case, there is a chance that
the air may not stay in contact with the heated surfaces long enough
to remove the heat. A lesser problem this can cause is turbulence,
which can create "hot spots".

In my experience with heating and cooling problems, getting the CFM
right for the heat generated can be an issue in other areas. It is
more of an art than a science. A lot of cutting and trying. I am
amazed at how well the PCs do it.

It may be that this is changing. We might have just been below the
power/heat threshold and anything would work.
An interesting read is the people who have filled their PC with oil
and stopped using air flow.
