Good idea - I actually thought of that at one point but did not bother
to figure out or learn how to do it, so thanks for the info.  I may
try it anyway, later, (when I try to preform forensics on it) - but
for now I am installing core 5 on a new drive, as I strongly suspect
hardware failure to be the root cause of this problem, and I would
very much like to get my friend's system back up and running as soon
as possible.

I have installed core 5 on a new drive, am doing updates now, and will
copy personal files from the old drive afterwards.  The end result
will be a more modern, updated system, which ultimately needed to be
done anyway - sooner or later.

Installing a new system is almost as much fun as fixing a broken one -
a "labor of love" :)
