Not wanting to start a riot, since I'm rather new to these parts :-) 
But sometimes change isn't a bad thing.   I'm giving Fedora Core the
boot (and blogging about it, perhaps as therapy, or maybe as a guide for
others) in favor of Ubuntu and some non-Linux stuff.   And I've been a
Red Hat/Fedora user for a very loooooong time.

For playing movies, Xine (and if you are a GNOME person, gxine) is your
buddy.   It works extremely well.   Go to the main project page to get
all the plugins you need.    I use it to stream audio as well - listen
to every St. Louis Blues hockey game :-)
