[NTLUG:Discuss] Hal help

Thanks for the input, but it's obvious that the scope of the problem is not being understood. I'll try again. On my computer, Suse 10.2 will not -- repeat, NOT -- mount ANY dvd media inserted into the drive. I can monitor the activity with ivman; in fact, "/usr/bin/ivman -d --nofork &" is a very good tool for seeing exactly what is happening in the automounting process. In this case, it refuses to automatically mount /dev/hdc with any dvd media. It will, however, mount cd media. Remember that Suse dumped automount recently and went with hal.

The kicker is that the installation media is a single dvd and, of course, Yast is able to read it. Also, I can manually mount a data dvd with "mount /dev/hdc /media/dvd" after first creating the /media/dvd directory.
No, logging in as root does not make it (automounting) work, either.

Maybe by now you can sense my frustration. If this were a blanket "no dvd can be read on any computer" problem, bugzilla would have overflowed and Suse would have fixed the problem. I am beginning to think that there is some compatability issue with my hardware which would indicate that the Suse process drills down too deeply into something it shouldn't. That means BUG in 10.2. My ability to manually mount the media seems to say this isn't a compatability issue, but at this point I just can't say for sure. Whatever is happening, it is keeping me from using this box for much more than web-based apps.

No, I am not the only one with the problem. I have seen reports dribbling in from others around the world. There is a bug report in bugzilla that is somewhat similar, so maybe it is a bona fide bug and the Suse team might even fix it. There is always hope.

In the meantime, I am working on the assumption that the problem can be fixed here. I do have a dvd burner in a client's machine that I might st... borrow for testing to see if it is a hardware issue.

Thanks again,
Fred
