If there is nothing in /var/log/messages, then log into the machine from
another machine and run "tty".

now edit /etc/syslog.conf

add a line like this using the response from tty:

*.*		/dev/pts/6            

restart syslog

/etc/init.d/syslog restart

Now all messages sent via syslog will go to that tty and therefore will
be seen in that login window after the machine shuts down.
