Yeah, either hardware trouble or software, or both.

Most probably something in the hardware. Does this only happen after
the screensaver activates, or does it happen at other times?

To paraphrase the psychotic penguins, "jerk and jam, baby, jerk and jam".

Or as we used to do, swap till you drop. If you suspect heating issues, a can of
freeze spray would come in handy.
