Okay, seeing the info about OpenGL screen savers reminded me that one of 
the recent updates was for the xorg x-server.  When I got home today and 
turned on the Debian system, there was yet another update ready to be 
downloaded, and it was also for the xorg x-server.  So, I took a chance, 
installed it and my system has been up for two hours without locking 
up.  If it is still up and responsive in the morning then I think I 
found the gremlin.  I will let the list know what turns up.  Thanks to 
all who responded.  I do appreciate it.
