I think you might want to check
to see if they have specific graphics parameters you can pass at startup.
(as it sounds like you're driving the monitor too hard).  In Knoppix,
you press F2 and/or F3 at startup and it'll provide parameters you can
pass to the system/kernel at startup.

Actually, might consider
connecting a better monitor to the machine for testing?
