Stan,

I'm currently running Linux Mint, an ubuntu(debian)
based distro and you can boot live and install from
the same cd.

I am running it on a mostly stock hp pavilion 724c.

Also, you night try Knoppix live cd. If you like it,
there is a way of installing it also. But it should
give decent video, and might help you troubleshoot
your video issue so it will work better with another
distro.
