If the monitor can display at all (text mode), then
your problem is not hardware.
However, You may need to be aware of special settings
for your monitor... Google is your friend in this
case. (model #, distro, and 'X setup').
Also, In addition to resolution and refresh rate, I
have had trouble with color depth and some X Server
selections. The safest color depth is 16bit. going
with 24 or 32 bit can cause some servers to crash due
to unsupported color depth. You can pick them during
install, but they don't work at boot.
