What's risk are you trying to minimize or avoid with a backup?  Also, do
you really mean backup (a fallback in case something goes wrong) or
archive (a snapshot of your system's state for historical purposes)?
How much data?

As a use case example, several (all?) people in our management team
backup their laptops at least once a day to external USB2 drives using
rsync.  They're cheap, fast, portable, ubiquitous, and OS agnostic.
