Just a suggestion, can you do a packet capture?  I doubt you can on the 
server end but do you have a network at home or school where you could 
have a Linux and Windows machine on the same subnet?  Using 
Etherreal/WireShark to get a trace might be most illuminating.  The 
packet-level responses might be very clear.  Particularly, if this is 
really ftp and not http, you may get some good information because ftp 
responses are plain text.
