There is also the sysreq key sequence which is handy when the system ins
in swap hell and has no memory to handle a new ssh session, or your gui
is locked up.
Alt-PrtScreen-S - emergency disk sync
Alt-PrtScreen-U - emergency remount-readonly all filesystems
Alt-PrtScreen-B - emergency reboot
Don't use it instead of a controlled shutdown, but it beats the 6 second
hold of death on the power button.
Also, you X is probably configured to catch and ignore the Ctrl-Alt-Del
sequence, Ctrl-Alt-Backspace resets the Xserver and onces that is
resetting, Ctrl-Alt-Del will reset or (If you edit your inittab, Halt)
