[NTLUG:Discuss] Mounted Volume Drive Icon Names - a mystery - [a gnome mystery]

I'm looking at my Ubuntu system and I *think* I see where the names for
the mounted drives are coming from, but not sure, and do not see any
way to change
them.  (In some cases, it might be nice to change them to something a
bit more descriptive).
If you look at: /proc/ide/hda/media or /proc/ide/hdb/media or
/proc/ide/hdc/media (which ever the case may be), you will [probably]
see: "disk"
e.g. [type this in a terminal window]:
cat /proc/ide/hda/media
or
cat /proc/ide/hdb/media
or
cat  /proc/ide/hdc/media
(you will see what I mean, on my system it simply  says "disk")

Now if I plug in a USB Flash Memory Device, (such as the Kingston 128
meg USB Flash memory stick I just plugged into this PC), I find the
icon that appears on the Desktop is labeled "Kingston"
So, I look at /proc/scsi/scsi and...
cat /proc/scsi/scsi
Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00
  Vendor: Kingston Model: DataTraveler 2.0 Rev: 4.10
  Type:   Direct-Access                    ANSI SCSI revision: 02
...so we might suppose that the name is derived from the first word
after "Vendor:" (in the case of a device mounted under scsi emulation
anyway), (or, at least, I assume that's where it is coming from).

I'm [only now] supposing that this process is handled by  gnome-volume-manager
and am looking at:
man  gnome-volume-manager
&
man  gnome-volume-properties

...not really finding many answers there.. but

I find that the icons are not really files at all - at least not
anything that would appear in
/home/user-name/Desktop, but they just appear there by some stoke of
Ubuntu magic.
 (Actually, I suppose it's a function of udev [magic])
So, I'm looking at:
man udev

I still don't know what to do to change it, but ...

Well, maybe I should change my signature file to:
