Your provider is not thinking clearly (sorry).

du won't show you the filesystem overhead for things like
journaling.  Send a nasty-gram to your hosting provider.

I know that my hosting provider (which does allow me
to see filesystem info) also provides a web interface
to show me disk utilization... maybe your does the same
and you can "scrape" that data??
