Actually, I'd say that's a very relevant point.  Let's agree on some 
testing methods and we can ALL run tests on our various sets of 
hardware.  I have a variety of external drives both firewire and USB 
2.0.  I have no firewire 800 hardware, but I can certainly run some 
tests against the hardware I have now.  Establishing standard test 
procedures and reporting the results to the list could be a very useful 
exercise.
