The HP machine HD is *extremely* thoroughly wiped:

Western Digital Diagnostics floppy disk tools, writing 0's over the 
entire drive.

Partitioned with Linux fdisk to have a 150M swap partition and a 27G 
partition, ext2 filesystem.

Slackware 11.0 installed from DVD, Drop-line Gnome installed from the 
internet.

FULL install, X conffigured for i810 video from the HP motherboard. 

The AC97 codec is enabled in the BIOS, but not found and loaded by alsa.

This machine will run Linux, but it has tons of trouble with M$-Windows 
(3.11, 95, 98,...). So, Linux it is, just don't have sound.
