A new install is a bit extreme. Have you installed Automatix? I ask not because you need it but because it would be an easy way to check to see that all necessary repositories are enabled.

Sorry. I should have indicated what I saw when I tried to use
Synaptic. When I put in Firestarter, firestarter, Lokkit, lokkit,
gnome-Lokkit, or gnome-lokkit, the result was the same. No packages
were displayed, at all. I tried all search variations available
within Synaptic (Name, Name and ..., etc.) with the same null result.
