Almost all monitors that have DVI will also have D-Sub(standard VGA) so 
you could put off the new video card.  Er, I mean, you're right, if you 
are getting a new LCD monitor you MUST get a new video card as well. 
There is simply no way around it.  (Please select whichever answer best 
fits your desires.)

I've had good luck with nVidia based cards but now that AMD has released 
the specs for ATI chips allowing full-featured open-source drivers, ATI 
may soon become the video cards of choice for Linux users.  Of course, 
it may be a while before these drivers are actually available.
