I am looking for what you consider to be the best Photo Organizer (under
Linux, of course). Criteria:
1) Tags - can associate various tags/labels that let you do searches.
Ideally, allows you to select a group of files to add the tag(s) to.
2) Can understand EXIF and other meta data (specifically must know what
Canon 20D generates, which should be standard)
3) Knows how to handle embedded jpg inside RAW files (IIRC, Canon 20D
can store that way)
4) Does not copy files into it's own area/DB. Unless you can bring up a
very good reason for this, I consider it a waste of space.
5) Fairly fast to browse through sizeable thumbnails
6) Means of marking favorite pics (subset you consider best. I take a
lot of pics and don't like to delete much...)
7) Knows how to display photos in correct position (portrait /
landscape) using info stored from camera

Nice to have:
8) auto tags with timestamp found in EXIF metadata so can do searches
based on date
9) drag/drop organizing of actual files. I still prefer to have a dir
tree of year / event (such as Christmas) / [sub-event] instead of one
multi-gig dir of all pics.
10) It is possible that in the near future I'll get a Mac to do all of
the photo stuff. So, it would be nice to make it easy for the Mac to
utilize the tag set. At least be able to import it.
