That's a puzzler.  Lemme see if I got that right:

- login as user via ssh works
- login as user via the console doesn't work
- login as root via ssh doesn't work
- login as root via the console works

If you login as root via the console, can you become user with su?
If you login as user via ssh, can you become root with su?

Is this a fresh standard install of FC6?  Anything fancy, like extra
security or something?
