I tried a *buntu and found the hamstrung root account made simple
issues almost as hard to fix as they are in Windoze, but I do have
experience[scars].

Try this perhaps...

Good luck

I am running Ubuntu, so is there a way to tell any of the apt programs to rebuild all installed packages? Or, better yet, is there a way to tell apt to scan all the packages and have it report (or reinstall) packages where it finds missing files? I seem to remember that there was a way to have apt scan your installed files and report missmatched md5sums.
