I have been bitten by this and have forever more sworn off Verisign and 
Network Solutions.

There are PLENTY of other registrars.   I think godaddy and register.com 
are some popular ones.   I have found GKG.NET to be a local(Texas) 
company that will be MY recommendation point for everyone.  Couple that 
with free DNS from zoneedit for low traffic domains and the solution is 
VERY cost effective.
