Yea, but at least there is an alternative.  Just finished going through 
one of those "poorly documented" issues with the korn shell: How does 
one get the file descriptor for 'read -u'?  Fortunately I was persistent 
(or maybe just fortunate) to find two or three offhand references from 
which I was able to assemble the pieces of opening and closing an 
existing file in a shell script.
