The security problems are for the old phpBB.

That project has been rejuvenated after a long sleep.

Version 3 (now released) is a BIG improvement.

Also, because of licensing issues with SMF (which IS very good), the 
Joomla Portal (www.joomla.com) community is towards phpBB.
