What does this dmesg output mean?
SFW2-INext-DROP-DEFLT IN=eth2 OUT= MAC= SRC=192.168.1.150 DST=224.0.0.251 LEN=106 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=255 ID=0 DF PROTO=UDP SPT=5353 DPT=5353 LEN=86
My office computer is 192.168.1.150.
According to IANA RFC3171,
"Local Network Control Block (224.0.0/24)
Addresses in the Local Network Control block are used for protocol
control traffic that is not forwarded off link. Examples of this
type of use include OSPFIGP All Routers (224.0.0.5) [RFC2328]."
OK, I can read, but I don't quite understand. Yesterday my log
was full of entries in the 224.x.x.x range. I kept seeing
dsl activity so I started looking.
Maybe these two events are unrelated, I used Azureus to download
something the night before. After closing Azureus a "ps -ef" showed
that it was still running, so I had to kill it. The network activity
continued until I took the system to single user. I know, I
could have shutdown just the networking, but it was more satisfying
to "init s". Then I went to bed. This morning I took it back to
"init 5" and a tail of dmesg gives 3 of the above entries. I look
at the log periodically and no more messages.
So, what happened?
Thanks,
Fred
