Howdy,
  I have multiple reasons.  One is that I trust the open source drivers
more.  I crashed a system recently when I installed a XEN kernel.  It
turns out the XEN kernel adds a couple of things that the proprietary
driver did not support.  I rebuilt the system and just installed the
open source nVidia drivers.  The system has been fine ever since.  The
closed source drivers worked better with Compiz, but I can live without
that.  Secondly, I feel better about the system knowing it is clean of
closed source stuff.  I suppose some people would be fine with
ndiswrapper for their network drivers, but I never used it and think
that is the right decision for similar reasons.
