[NTLUG:Discuss] Pidgin & ubuntu 8.04

My question involves the send feature and before you ask yes I have researched Pidgin site, read documentation and stated concern on ubuntu forum.
I bring it here because were it not for this group I would still be floundering in windows.
So pidgin is installed, I can get the conversation screen and can type the message, but send does nothing, nor does any of the options available above conversation screen. i.e. conversation-options-send to
Any suggestions
