Howdy,
  There are all sorts of documents with words in them.  Are you, by any
chance, talking about MS Word documents?  If so, it depends on what
format they are in.  If they are .doc files, then OpenOffice.org Writer
will most likely handle them fine.  I have seen problems with documents
with long, complex tables, but everything else seems to work.  If your
files are in the new .docx format, nothing is perfect at reading them.
The format is intentionally made hard to duplicate.  OpenOffice 3.0 is
supposed to handle some of them.  For .doc files, there are several
options.  AbiWord and KWord also seem to do a pretty good job.
