[NTLUG:Discuss] VMWare to give away ESXi for free, soon!

Given the Subject line and below, can someone 'in the know" (meaning
they've run VMWare using some Linux host AND run their VM's with ESXi)
please compare / contrast the benefits of running one or the other.

Would you say that ESXi is already optimized to run VMs?  I
find that REALLY hard to believe if it has the ability to run on a variety
of hardware.....as it'll probably resort to the 'lowest common SAFE 
hardware' configurations and not be optimized?
