Does the class have an on-line discussion forum for you to ask
questions of your instructor and classmates?  You may not be the only
person in that situation.  The instructor should be made aware.

Personally, I would start with something that give guaranteed instant feedback:

$ echo "Hello, world"
Hello, world

What distro are you using?  What shell?
