First and foremost when asking for help to correct a concern give as much information as possible. Do not do what I did with Tony and Ralph. Their patience in extracting what I had experienced was astounding.
I sent Tony a MSG. that I was back to normal and his reply is contained below and it is the reason I am sending this.
1. Experimenting with linux is part of the learning curve, but until you become experienced document each step you take so when you begin to drown the Tony's and Ralph's can throw you a lifeline because you can tell them how you got into this choppy water.
2. I obviously did a kernel upgrade not realizing it (Hey being 76 is not funny when astuteness and comprehension become an issue) So that was one reason for the black screen, but there was another error as well dealing with my wireless chip. (I have an old hp ze4935wm
3. So i upgraded at linuxwireless.org via usb save without a clue whether it would work or not after I tried this next step.
4.Immediately after the BIOS screen comes up, press Esc’ for more options. your hidden GRUB (boot) menu, press Esc and then select the third line down. This will allow you to boot into the kernel you were using previously.
This is damn scary for a newbiehttp://www.lockergnome.com/linux/2007/09/22/ubuntu-black-screen-recovery/
Then I followed the directions here which are long and specific.
Nothing about a chip needed so I went on my merry way
Now this next part was probably not necessary but I did it anyway. I burned a new live CD the one used originally was an older one that Doug loaded for me at last NTLUG. Ok I like living dangerously.
5. Put the new CD in and learned there was no repair option but there was a install to largest unallocated space. So went to gparted formatted that partition that ubuntu resided on and worried like the dickens about my dual boot capability.
Installed, no problems back to normal with dual boot.

What did you do to fix it? This is always something lacking in the
linux world. Someone else is going to run into the same or very
similar problem and not know how to fix it. If there is anything you
can post to the NTLUG list about your experience and how you fixed it
that would be great for the rest of the community to learn from.
