Re: Ubuntu install "disaster," all is not lost. I have been there and
done that.
Get a copy of fdisk.exe from any older Windoze distro.
Run fdisk /mbr

This will restore your boot sector. I am sure some of the other Linux
gurus can help with setting up grub, but do not install it on C:\ or it
will overwrite the master boot record again

lonestar17,

I google'd that, and I got this hit:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GjzFU6rXwLo
according to it, you can do the following:
1. Shut Down
2. Hit MD button (causes error)
3. Shut Down
4. Reboot (displays error)
5. Shut Down
6. Hit MD Button
7. Shut Down
8. Reboot (problem gone)

no idea if it will work.

FYI, came across this screencast today, good tutorial:

"Ottawa Canada Linux Users Group recently hosted another of its Kernel
Walkthrough tutorials given by Bart Trojanowski. The screencast starts
with a one-hour presentation on the components involved, and then
dives into the code which bootstraps the kernel on the 32bit x86
platform. The first Kernel Walkthrough by the Ottawa Canada Linux
Users Group covered Linux development background, file layout and data
types."

You could boot to your Ubuntu CD, without installing Ubuntu, and
access your files.

Watching some of the training reported on Canadian conference (Most over
my head) led me to a search which resulted in An Introduction to the
Linux Command Shell for Beginners dated 2006
I would dearly love to purchase this if its on CD and why would it not
as thorough as linux folk are.
It was reported on by flora.org and my attempt thus far to join merely
to obtain said resource have failed.
Any help appreciated

Allen
