I vote GATEWAY as the most likely reason for the problems you
experience.  I have had numerous problems in the past with gateway
computers and especially laptops.  The quality of construction was bad
and so was the reliability.  I would urge you to go with Dell, HP or
Lenovo for a laptop as they are fairly reliable, sturdy and Linux friendly.
