I did - the output was included in an earlier post.  It essentially says 
that the K3b's command to close the drive door was terminated with a 
"NOT READY" message from the driver.  It does that for blank DVD-RW's 
but not for CD-R's (blank or otherwise) and not for video DVD's or for 
DVD-RW's that have already been written to.

That seems to be the heart of the problem - it seems to have a 'thing' 
about blank DVD-RW's...but I have no clue how to proceed from there to a 
solution.

Tomorrow I'll buy some DVD+RW's and see if they fare any better.
