Well, I tried it first with whatever was installed by SuSE 9.3 - but 
when it didn't
work, I upgraded K3b and cdrdao to the latest versions.   It didn't help.

But I've now successfully burned DVD+R's and DVD+RW's - it's just the 
DVD-RW's
that don't work.

I'm just about 100% certain that the drive doesn't work as advertised.   
But I don't really
care whether I use +RW or -RW media and it's really not worth the hassle 
of taking the
thing back and struggling all over again with another drive.
