If your ISP does not supply a static IP address, then IPCOP can be
easily setup to dynamically obtain its unprotected (Red) zone IP address
from your ISP.
If you also wish to resolve your dynamic IP address to an actual
hostname, try taking advantage of one of the free dynamic DNS services,
such as:
http://www.dyndns.com/services/dns/dyndns/
As a long time user of IPCOP (Ralph helped me with my first installation
some years ago), I agree with Terry that it is easy to administer and
setup. At any time administer about 4-6 IPCOP firewalls, and have been
extremely happy with its feature set.
For those wishing to try something a bit more new, exotic, and polished,
I just finished deploying the open source version of the Untangle
Firewall (www.untangle.com). This firewall system requires more
processing power and memory than an IPCOP installation, but has an
impressive web interface, up to 7 different zones (IPCOP supports a
maximum of 4), and many new features to gawk at.
As always, ymmv...
