I have been programming for over 20 years now. IDEs are tools. Many
companies integrate their SDK into IDEs to make development using their
tools or technologies easier, but it does not make a programmer. Java
is a horrible language as far as how easy it is for people to screw up.
An IDE can help, plus and IDE can make it easier to debug. An IDE is
a tool. Can you program without one? Sure. Can you debug without one?
Yes. Does an IDE decrease the development time and increase the
chances of catching mistakes? In most instances yes. Personally I have
to program in ~6 different languages. On all but 2, I use IDEs because
it helps. IDEs don't make people think they are programmers. IDEs
aren't ruining the perfect world of text editors and command line compilers.
Java sucks. VB sucks. All programming languages suck, but some suck
less than others. If I had to do VC.Net or VB.Net programming without
an IDE I would kill someone. I don't like programming Java at all, but I
do it because I have to. I like NetBeans, it makes certain aspects of
programming java GUIs more bearable. I'm not a Java programmer, I am
insane for trying to tame a suck-ass language on a suck-ass platform to
meet stupid requirements I don't agree with.
yeah, no one cares...
