[NTLUG:Discuss] Good tutorial for connecting Linux boxen?

Hi all,

I've googled for this, but there is such an information overload out
there, I'm kind of at a loss where to go. I've tried a couple of
things, such as using Krdc and Krfb to connect my laptop to my desktop
machine, but I was unable to get that to work. One of the things I want
to accomplish is accessing my vast music library on my desktop with my
laptop, with the ability to copy music over to my laptop or just use the
desktop as a streaming client to my laptop.

I know the easier of the two would be to copy music over. I want to
achieve that first, figuring out how to access the music by streaming
later. I also want to use the native linux methods for doing this as I
have NEVER been able to get Samba to work with my wife's Windows box for
some reason and can't see why I should use a Windows workaround to
network two linux computers. I'd much rather use a native linux
networking environment.

Here's the current scenario. Both computers are behind a Smoothwall
firewall using DHCP to dole out IP addresses to the client computers. I
don't even care about Internet access at this point (I already have
that) and I don't care about trying to access either computer from
outside the firewall. I just want to be able to network the two
computers behind the firewall, in a peer-to-peer sort of way. I'm open
to anything though.

Basically, I'm looking at using the desktop as a file server to the
laptop (and later, my wifes Windows XP SP2 box). Can someone point me
to a really good tutorial on how to set it up? I know it's weird that
there is SO much information on the net, but it's hard to know which is
best to use.

Laptop is running Kubuntu 8.04, KDE 3.5.10
Desktop is running Kubuntu 7.04 KDE 3.5.6

Thanks,
