I corrected it. Still not sure how. I ran 
sudo shutdown now -r
Then choose recovery mode, triex correct x or what ever. Then tried normal boot. and it came up w/o error message.
Thanks for your interest and I keep trying and overcoming these challenges.
Great however to have this resource and folks like Cris and other to lean on when needed

  That's normal.  It's just looking for a suspend to disk signature in swap, where
  a suspend to disk it going to store it's restore information.

  Just guessing... seems that laptop actually booted up?  Just didn't give
  your a GUI login... correct?

  You logged in using your username and password and
  got a shell prompt.  Right?

  Just want to better understand what is happening before troubleshooting...

  Assuming you did log in and get a shell prompt, can you do

  who -r

  what runlevel does it show?
