Hmmm...that's an idea that I
hadn't tried yet....

I was able to get to run level 3....dmesg
looked OK...and /var/log/messages seemed OK!?

Noticed that
SELinux was on...changed it to permissive

did a startx and got
(what appears to be) the normal default desktop, but before it would me do
anything (after warning that some update program was being run by a
non-priviledged user (since I was logged in as root)...the machine locked
again...could move mouse....but no toggle screens and only next step was
hard-reset  (although the screen stayed clean - no 'scratchy'

uggg...back to square 1
