Reading your comments a little more, regarding your concerns of locate not being active on a recent Ubuntu system, I'd worry more about rpm. Ubuntu users will likely need to use some invocation of apt to get the version information. I'll assume that Ubuntu systems use the same directory structure as Fedora ie: /usr//lib/firefox-$ver/plugins although even that isn't a given.
