Crazy idea, possibly bad too but I will toss it out there anyhow ;^)

If the users you support are on a LAN or WAN, why not make the global
plugins and java dir an NFS share?
Then you update them all at once.


Yes I can think of reasons not to, but I want to hear them from you guys.
