I use grip almost exclusively for ripping
there are a couple things to look at
it has a builtin cdparanoia implementation, it could be trying to
erase a scratch
I have let it chew on a track for an hour to read through a scratch (worked too)
you can disable cdparanoia
also it may be timing out on cddb/freeddb
you can disable that
and of course as already stated, run any problematic app from cli so
you can get the stdout/stderr from it
