If you were using alsa, did you insure (using alsamixer) that all
channels were unmuted
alsa defaults channels to mute so you often need to un mute things
if you use alsa, once you have things set and sounding good, run
"alsalctl store" as root to insure the settings are recalled on reboot

I only know alsa well enough to help with, good luck.
