"In the last decade or so, the number of software and business method
patents has grown substantially. Companies increasingly view
developments in these areas as key components of their proprietary
intellectual property. Recently, however, the U.S. Court of Appeals for
the Federal Circuit affirmed the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's
decision in the “Bilski” case that certain software and business method
patent claims “are not directed to patent-eligible subject matter.”"
