It seems that xchat-gnome is actually a completely new frontend so it is 
quite a bit different from the standard xchat.

Go to IRC => Connect.  Select FreeNode from the list and click Connect.

Wait a minute and you should get a prompt to Join channel.  Enter 
"#ntlug" and click Join.
